Trust is everything for Kristin Magette. The way she sees it, trust is the currency for driving positive change. And the building blocks for earning trust aren’t the hard skills often associated with achieving business or organizational success. Rather, they’re soft skills such as listening, empathy, sincerity and curiosity.
She’s been developing these skills for more than two decades working in communications at Kansas State University, the public school district in Eudora, Kansas, and most recently at the California-based engineering firm Willdan.
She’s also the author of two books, The Social Media Imperative: School Leadership and Strategies for Success and Embracing Social Media: A Practical Guide to Manage Risk and Leverage Opportunity. Both guide district leaders and communications professionals in the strategic use of social media in schools for communication, teaching and learning.
In 2015, Kristin co-founded #k12prChat, which continues to connect the school PR community on Twitter. Since 2018, she also has been co-leading a national dialogue on employee wellness and self-care within the school PR community. With the name K12prWell, this multi-channel communications effort focuses on workplace well-being and approaches to avoid occupational burnout. Speaking engagements have included the National School Public Relations Association national seminar, presentations at state chapters across the country, webinars and more.

Married with two children and a big fan of small-town life, Kristin insists that only one mammal at a time can serve as the family pet. Bo the brindle rescue dog currently commands that position. She is, however, open to reptiles for the sake of her science teacher husband and kids, so Bo shares attention with two turtles, Live Action and Neal, and a bearded dragon, Benny.
